About Pregnancy Weight Gain
Healthy weight gain during pregnancy helps ensure your baby gets the nutrients needed to grow and helps your body prepare for breastfeeding. The amount you should gain depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI.
Recommended Total Weight Gain (Single Pregnancy):
- Underweight (BMI < 18.5): 12.5-18 kg
- Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9): 11.5-16 kg
- Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): 7-11.5 kg
- Obese (BMI ≥ 30): 5-9 kg
Where the Weight Goes:
- Baby: 3-4 kg
- Placenta: 0.7-1 kg
- Amniotic fluid: 1 kg
- Increased blood volume: 1.4-1.8 kg
- Breast tissue: 0.5-1.4 kg
- Uterus growth: 0.9-1.1 kg
- Maternal fat stores: 2.7-3.6 kg
