About UV Index & Skin Protection
The UV Index measures the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation at a particular place and time. It was developed by the WHO and indicates the risk of overexposure to UV rays.
UV Index Scale:
- 0-2 (Low): Minimal protection needed
- 3-5 (Moderate): Protection recommended, especially during midday
- 6-7 (High): Protection essential – seek shade during midday
- 8-10 (Very High): Extra protection needed – avoid midday sun
- 11+ (Extreme): Take all precautions – unprotected skin can burn quickly
Skin Type Classification:
The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin types based on their response to UV exposure:
- Type I-II: Highest risk – always or usually burns
- Type III-IV: Moderate risk – sometimes or rarely burns
- Type V-VI: Lowest risk – very rarely or never burns
Note: All skin types can develop skin cancer from UV exposure. This calculator provides estimates only.
